At the beginning of this year, the Satara girl made history by becoming the first Indian woman to summit Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest peak in the world at 8,485 meters! What an all-around climbing champ she is, as well!

Priyanka Mohite Early Life

Priyanka Mohite is originally from Satara, Maharashtra, a town located at the foothills of the Sahyadri Mountains. She learned about Chhatrapati Shivaji’s adventures at school, which were brought to life by her uncle, who would take his nieces and nephews on walks every weekend to keep them active.

“I’m a history buff, and the Ajinkyatara fort was one of the first forts I saw when I moved to India” (in Satara). It was a great source of inspiration to realize that I was walking in the footsteps of Shivaji Maharaj. It also provided a great deal of perspective for the material I was learning. My uncle, however, insisted that we join a professional trekking company as the treks became more difficult. As a result, I began traveling to the mountains with Kailash Badal of Sahyadri Trekking, now 26 years old,” the 26-year-old recounts.

Priyanka Mohite Career

As soon as she decided to pursue a career in this fascinating but potentially dangerous profession, Priyanka returned to Satara to complete her BSc (Biotech) degree in 2012. In addition, she completed her advanced mountaineering training at the same time. The next day, Priyanka ascended her first mountain, the 21500ft-high Mount Bunderpunch. And, even though Priyanka prefers to climb more rugged mountains rather than taller ones, she was given a chance to climb the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest.

One of my friends who attended the Himalayan Mountaineering School in Darjeeling advised me about a once-in-a-lifetime chance to summit the world’s highest mountain. As Priyanka recalls, “Their principal, Colonel Neeraj Rana, had planned on sending their squad to the Everest with the youngest members.”

“This is how I was introduced to the chance, and I took advantage of it the following month.” Being fresh out of the advanced course, I was in good shape and thoroughly acclimatized to the environment. “I ascended to a height of roughly 18000ft, and he chose myself and my companion to participate in the expedition.”

Priyanka Mohite Family

A continual source of inspiration for the climber, Priyanka’s father is a man of faith. “I give him credit for the ‘zidd’ I have in my personality, which is the ability never to give up. In addition, I would like to acknowledge Shivaji Maharaj, whose tales have inspired me from the beginning.” Priyanka’s whole family was anxiously awaiting her message at home, and they were understandably concerned given the two-day delay.

In addition, when Priyanka finally phoned her family after reaching the peak, her father inquired about her wishes for the time she would spend with her family. Her response: “I want to climb the incredibly lovely peak that I noticed on the way.” On the other hand, her mother just requested that she come home safely first.

Priyanka, on the other hand, wasn’t joking. She referred to Mount Lhotse, which stands at an elevation of 8,516 meters and is the fourth highest peak. Her mission was called off in 2014 due to an accident that claimed the lives of 16 Sherpa members. After an earthquake struck Nepal the next year, the climber escaped with just minor injuries. However, on the 16th of May, 2018, she ultimately reached the top, making it her second 8,000-meter peak.
